Particle Filtration & System Prefiltration

Prefiltration protects treatment processes from contaminants entering from outside the system. It also prevents particles released by treatment equipment from harming downstream processes, including other filters. You can read more detail about system prefilters, or go to the product selection table at the bottom of this page to explore specific filter options. In general, particle filtration and prefiltration remove particles larger than 1 micron.

The schematic below shows the beginning of a water treatment system that can deliver multiple grades of water. The possible locations of particle filters and prefilters are highlighted.

  • A- Particle Trap Filtration
  • B- Carbon Fines Trap
  • C- Resin Trap
  • D- RO Prefilter

Removing Particulates from Water

Raw water is usually filtered through a multi-media filter (sand filter) before entering a treatment system. In most cases, water from municipalities does not require this step. However, municipal water does carry particles that were not removed during the initial treatment process as well as particles from the distribution piping and equipment.

In addition to contaminants in the source water, resin-based systems such as softeners and deionizing beds can contribute particles. Resin does break down over time and pieces of resin can escape the resin vessels, so filters are used to trap the particles and prevent the contamination of downstream treatment processes.

Custom systems are designed for new applications and to solve challenges in existing processes. Critical Process Filtration will work with you to design, build and install a cost-effective system that delivers the results you need.
