Removing Particulates from Water
Raw water is usually filtered through a multi-media filter (sand filter) before entering a treatment system. In most cases, water from municipalities does not require this step. However, municipal water does carry particles that were not removed during the initial treatment process as well as particles from the distribution piping and equipment.
In addition to contaminants in the source water, resin-based systems such as softeners and deionizing beds can contribute particles. Resin does break down over time and pieces of resin can escape the resin vessels, so filters are used to trap the particles and prevent the contamination of downstream treatment processes.
